UPDATED November 2, 2009

As you may be aware, January 9, 2010 is the date of the 6th Annual National Engineers Week Future City - Idaho Regional Competition in Boise, Idaho. In the competition, the nation's largest engineering education program, 7th and 8th grade students first create cities on computers using SimCity software, and then build three-dimensional scale models. Students also write a brief abstract describing their city and present and defend their designs before a panel of engineer judges. The 2009-2010 Future City essay addresses the following topic: "Providing A Sustainable and Affordable Living Space For People Who Have Lost Their Home Due to a Disaster or Financial Emergency." An engineer mentor works with the team during the preparation for the competition. In its 18th year nationally, the Future City Competition is a proven program that helps encourage students to pursue engineering careers and helps teachers meet science, math, social studies, arts, and language art curriculum requirements.

Primary sponsors of the Idaho Regional Competition are the Micron Technology Foundation, the Southwest Chapter of the Idaho Society of Professional Engineers, Boise State University College of Engineering, University of Idaho College of Engineering, and URS. The funding from these generous sponsors provides the venue, marketing, and some of our logistical costs. We need additional funding to provide prizes and continued funding for the Future City Competition in Idaho. Our short-term goal with this fundraising effort is to purchase prizes for the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place teams in addition to the medals provided by our professional society sponsors. We are also raising money in anticipation of an aggressive marketing program next spring to recruit schools. Our goal, which we have achieved every year so far, is to allow them to compete at no cost beyond the model construction by covering the $25 team entry fee.

Please support this excellent educational program by sending a check made out to Future City Idaho to the following address:
